Life in Paris

In case you never had the chance to come visiting Paris, it basically is the capital of France and a wonderful city. Known for its huge monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame de Paris, the Garnier opera and many more, it is also known for its culture and art, a city of fashion and gastronomy and a romantic ‘Hausman-style’ city.

Wherever you come from, you will never hear anybody telling you that moving to another city or country is an easy task. The first thing to know, if you plan to move to Paris, is that accommodation is quite expensive (actually this is the most expensive French city for housing). You will often discuss with people living in a 10m² apartment whose rent easily reaches €600.

Also, you have to know that the subway can be your enemy number one. On one hand this is an easy way to cross the city (using one or more from 16 different lines), and on the other hand it can cause you a lot of trouble. It seems that there is a curse upon the metro that causes you to easily find escalators when you are just wearing a handbag but you hardly find them when you have a big heavy baggage or when your legs hurt. Another problem which is generally, as a matter of course, common to all the metros is that it is often late and full.

As you may know Paris is ideal for lovers because of its beauty but you could sometimes be shocked by the unfriendly parisian attitude. When you come from a city in which people are very welcoming and usually in a friendly mood, this city can be very depressing. Some people are often grumpy and stressed.

You will also notice that there is a lot of traffic and pollution and that the weather is mainly rainy.

As soon as you will be acclimated to all of these details, you will gloss over them and start enjoying yourself.

If you have been able to go through those steps, be sure that living in Paris will be a pleasure. There is an infinite number of things to do in the city of love. For instance, if it is raining but you don’t want to stay in your flat and be bored, you can visit a lot of museums and exhibitions (the Louvre as mentioned before, the Musée d’Orsay, the Palais de Tokyo, the Jeu de Paume national gallery, etc…) or you can go to one of the numerous cinemas ready to receive you.

When the weather clears up and even (if you are lucky) when the sun is shinning, you can enjoy your day by going to the Tuileries for a walk, by visiting the district of Montmartre, or even going on a picnic in the Buttes-Chaumont park. Moreover, talking about having lunch, as said before France is also well known for its gastronomy. To put in a nutshell, you have to know that Paris is full of amazing restaurants and breweries, coffes and tea shops, and even kebabs. Then if you are a fashion lover, the city of love is also the best place to be. Not only for the most famous designers as Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent or Gaultier, but also for the multitude of little shops you can discover, including famous Second Hand vintage shops.

It is almost impossible to list all the things you can do in Paris, but as a conclusion you should know where to go to party. Without talking about the numerous bars, in case you like electronic music you may enjoy going the Social Club, the Rex Club, the Showcase, the Bateau Far or the Wanderlust. Unless you like rock’n’roll music you might prefer going to the Truskel or to the Bus Palladium. Also, if you like Hip-Hop you can go to the Camden or to the Gibus. If you don’t want to choose between all those musical styles you can go to the Club 79, l’Arc, Le Baron, l’Aquarium.

To conclude, if you take your time to discover all of the qualities of Paris, always keeping an open  mind, you will certainly meet great people and fall in love with this city.
