How to overcome your shyness?

Pauline Le Guilloux

Blushing, panic, fear of speaking in public, or emotional inability to say no … Shyness is probably the most common weakness. Excessive shyness means pain: it rots your daily life and makes you pass up many opportunities. How to overcome this difficulty of being towards others?

Be confident

What you need to do is to be more confident and worry less about what people may think or say about you.

This is essential, because shyness and lack of confidence are closely related. You will not be able to overcome your shyness, if you don’t start to believe in you. So be yourself!

Be calm

If you find yourself in a situation that starts to make you nervous, the first thing you have to do is take a deep breath. Then, relax and tell to yourself: “they are humans just like me, they also have the same fears and the same concerns as me. ”

When you are relaxed, you are able to see things more objectively. This may help you to step back, to detach yourself from the emotions, that come first, and have a healthier and more appropriate response.

Accept compliments

If you’re shy, there is a good chance that you blush, whenever you receive compliments. So, start practising the art of acceptance.

The best way to do that is to start enjoying yourself. Then, take the firm decision to see compliments as something normal in life.

Being totally open to compliments means that you accept yourself as you are and recognize the qualities that you have and the value that you bring. This is a first step to build confidence and be less shy.

Face stressful situations

Try to expose yourself to anxiety-provoking situations, but gradually. It is not because you are afraid, that there is a real danger. Hence, you need to set yourself small challenges. It can be simple, in the beginning, like approaching someone in the evening, sharing the table with colleagues who bully you, accepting an invitation or initiating one, trying to speak in front of a small public etc.

You can also practice theatre, or improvisation to overcome your fear. Sometimes, sports, through competition, or even music concerts, can help you become less shy. There is no ready-made solution that suits everyone. What works is what is done mainly for pleasure.

This effort to beat your shyness, will not be easy at all and it will take quite a long time. Never discourage yourself, with time and tenacity, you will overcome it.
